Sel Bonnell Oval Shines Bright After Major Lighting Upgrade

REES completes a major LED lighting upgrade at Sel Bonnell Oval in Cooroy, delivering brighter, more energy-efficient facilities and greater opportunities for local sports participation.

A Brighter Future for Cooroy’s Sporting Community

Sel Bonnell Oval in Cooroy is now shining brighter than ever, thanks to a major lighting upgrade delivered by REES Sports Lighting. The project involved the construction of four new light towers equipped with high-performance, energy-efficient LED luminaires, transforming the oval into a vibrant hub for evening sports and community activities.

“This project has been a fantastic collaboration between local council, sporting clubs, and our design and construction team,” said John Hellyar, REES Managing Director. “We’re proud to deliver lighting that supports longer training hours, more flexible scheduling, and a better experience for players and spectators alike.”

Lighting Designed and Built for Performance

REES managed the project — from design review and structural engineering to installation, testing, and commissioning. The result is a safe, compliant, and sustainable lighting solution that enhances visibility, reduces running costs, and meets the demanding standards of modern community sport.

More Hours on the Field, More Opportunities to Play

The upgrade means local clubs such as the Cooroora United Football Club and Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club can now train and compete well into the evening. With 32 football teams and seven cricket teams using the grounds year-round, the improved lighting supports participation across all ages and abilities.

“Our club has players aged from four to seventy years old,” said Club Secretary Barry Luckman. “Having these new lights will enable us to run more training sessions and skill clinics, especially during the winter months when it’s dark by 5pm.”

Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club President David McVey added:

“This upgrade allows us to train later in the evenings and even play day-night cricket. It’s a huge win for members who work late and for the future of local cricket.”

Sustainability in Action

In keeping with REES’s environmental values, the old timber light poles will be repurposed by Noosa Council’s bridge team for future local infrastructure use giving them a valuable second life and reducing waste.

Proudly Lighting the Way for Queensland Sport

This important community project reflects REES’s ongoing commitment to designing and building high-quality sports lighting solutions that enhance participation, safety, and connection in local communities across Queensland.
